Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Noise filtering

1. Load the photo
We haven't yet discussed one of Lightroom's most important tool, noise filtering, although photographers often need external help when taking pictures with a high sensitivity or long exposure. This is especially true for RAW images where the camera's internal noise filtering usually does not work perfectly.
So, what is Lightroom's noise filter capable of? Dealing with the two most important noise components: luminance and color noise. The sea of grain called "noise" primarily consists of these two components. They are of different character and can be filtered separately.
Above, we zoomed a small, noisy detail to 800%. Above the zoomed part, you can see the luminance and color components of noise. Luminance noise consists of harsh, monochrome grains. This is why it is pretty difficult to separate it from actual tiny details of the image, and this is why it can add pseudo-details to not very homogeneous areas of pictures, deceiving the viewer. Color noise appears as random color spots. It can be relatively effectively filtered by blurring separated color channels. You can often achieve spectacular results by just filtering this component. Take care however, as overdoing color noise removal decreases richness of the picture and may create a washed, dull color palette.

2. Two halves
Noise filtering tools can be found on the right-hand toolbar of the Develop section, under Noise Reduction. The two components can be adjusted using separate sliders. Increase Luminance to reduce luminance noise, and do the same to Color to filter color noise.
The preview image, slightly above, shows a picture part in original size. Use the icon in the upper left corner of the preview area, or just pan the small image to select any picture part you want. You'll want to choose a darker, more homogeneous area as noise is most annoying here.
You can also choose a typical—and preferably noisy—part, zoomed at least to 100%.

3. Against color noise
The default value for the Color slider is 25 in Lightroom. This is sufficient in most cases to blur the swirls but still not to affect the original colors of the photo. Begin noise reduction with this slider, and if the default setting is not enough, slowly increase it until the confetti disappear from the homogeneous areas.
As you can see, the default filter value of 25 was just enough for our sample image. Only luminance noise remained, like a greyish dust cloud.

4. Luminance noise
Removing luminance noise requires more attention as its filtering may significantly damage image quality. Be very careful when increasing the slider and keep checking the preview or the original, zoomed at least to 100%. Lightroom's noise filtering is of course not perfect or infallible, and thus, higher values will surely make you lose details, while lower ones retain some of the noise. You'll have to find out whether you want a more washed picture with less noise, or one less filtered but still somewhat noisy.

5. Devoid of "all" noise
The final result will unavoidably be a compromise, but one obviously much better and a lot nearer to your original concept than what you would have by keeping all the initial noise.
For another good solution, you can also omit filtering the RAW image, convert it to TIF or PSD, and try a more advanced plugin installed in Photoshop. These offer more settings, and therefore, more accurate filtering with less loss. Such separately available plugins include NoiseWare, Noise Ninja, or Neat Image.
