Creating a coffee mug with hot coffee

This whole project will show you how to create a cup manually using Pen Tool, Elliptical Marquee Tool, Ellipse Tool, Magic Wand, Paint Bucket and Eraser. We use also effects from filter located on the Menubar. Once you learned these tools you can create not only a cup of coffee but anything that you want. follow the direction carefully and goodluck.



1. Let's start with 20cm x 20cm, 72 solution with black background. Select Pentool on the Toolbox. Create the same path on the image below (1a). Press Ctrl+Enter to select a path. Add new layer named Cup. Set the foreground color into brown or ( R:199 G:74 B:27). Select Paint Bucket Tool. Click inside the selection. See the image (1b).

2. Select the layer Cup in the Layer palette. Select Magic Wand in the Toolbox then click the oval shape hole to create a selection. Add new layer named Inside of Cup above layer Background. Select Paint Bucket and set the foreground color to white. Left click inside the selection. See the image below.

3. Create a path using Pen Tool similar to the image below. Press Ctrl+Enter to make a selection. On the Layer Palette, click Create New Fill located on the bottom of the Layer Palette. Select Brightness/Contrast. Set the following: Brightness: -35, Contrast: 5. Make sure on the Layer Palette, that Brightness/Contrast was positioned above the layer named Cup. Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast A.

4. To remove the excess Brightness/Contrast outside the cup, press Ctrl+left click the square shape on the layer cup (not the name of the layer) on the Layer Palette to create a selection. Then click Ctrl+shift+I to inverse on the Layer Palette. Create a folder by pressing the Create a New Group which is located in the bottom of Layer Palette. Rename it Group A. Ctrl + left click the Brightness/Contrast A on Layer Palette to create the selection. Select the folder Group A then click the Add Layer Mask located on the bottom part of the Layer Palette. Place the Brightness/Contrast A inside the folder Group A by dragging up into Group A. See the layer image below.

5. From this step, we must concentrate only on the folder Group A.This means all fills and layers we need to add must be inside this group. Select Pen Tool and draw a path same as image below (5a). Ctrl+Enter to make a selection. Add Create New Fill and choose Brightness/Contrast. Set the Brightness to -75 and Contrast to -10. Click OK. Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast B.See the image 5b as a result.

6. Select the Eraser on the Tool Box or simply press E. Set the following: Mode:Brush, Brush:500, Opacity:100, Flow:100. Erase the part as shown below.

7. Select Ellipse Tool on the Tool Box. Do the same on image below(7a). Press Ctrl+Enter. Press Ctrl+Alt+P to open the Feather Selection and set the radius to 5. Click OK. On the Layer Palette, select the folder Group A, then press Delete.

8. Select Pen Tool and create a path similar to the image below (8a). press Ctrl+Enter. Select the Brightness/Contrast B on the Layer Palette. Click Create New Fill then left click Brightness/Contrast and set the Brightness to -20 and Contrast to -5. Click OK. Rename the new fill as Brightness/Contrast C. Select Eraser on the Tool Box. Same setting to Step no.6. Click [ ] to adjust the size of Brush. See the image 8b and 8c as a ressult.

9.Select Pen Tool on the Tool Box. Create the same path on image below (9a). Press Ctrl+Enter. Press Ctrl+Alt+D to open a Feather selection. Set the radius to 5 pixels only. Add Create New Fill then select the Brightness/ Contrast. Set the following: Brightness:-50, Contrast:-50. Click OK. Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast D. See the result below (9b).

10. Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool or simply press M. Create the oval shape same as the image below (10a). Press Ctrl+Alt+D to open Feather Selection. Set the Value to 20 pixels. Click OK. Add Create New Fill, set the following: Brightness: 20, Contrast:0. Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast E.

11. We stop the work for GroupA for a while. Create a new group named Cuplips. Select PenTool and draw a path same on the image below (11a). Press Ctrl+Enter to make a selection. Press Ctrl+Alt+D to open Feather Selection, set the pixels to 4. Click OK. Select the folder Cuplips. Click Add Layer Mask botton located on the lower part of the Layer Palette. Press Ctrl+left click the square shape inside the layer Cup on the Layer Palette to make a selection. Press Ctrl+shift+I to inverse the selection. Select the folder Group Cuplips then press Delete. Press Ctrl+left click the folder group Cuplips and compare to the image below (11B) if it's same selection.

12. Press Ctrl+Select the folder Cuplips. Go to Select > modify> contract. Set the Contract Selection by 2 pixels. Click OK. Add Create New Fill select Brightness/Contrast.Rename Brightness/Contrast F. Set Brightness to 40 and Contrast to -10. Click OK. See the image 12a as a result. Select the layer InsideofCup then drag up until on the top of all layers. See image 12a and 12b.

13. Select the Brightness/Contrast F.Then drag inside the folder Cuplips. Ctrl+left click the brightness/Contrast F to make a selection. Go to Select>modify>contract. Set the Contract by 2 pixels. press OK. Ctrl+Alt+D to open the Feather Selection, then set the radius by 1. Click OK. Add Create New Fill. Select the Brightness/Contrast, set the brightness to 30 and Contrast to 5. Click OK. Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast G. Make sure the fill is inside the folder Cuplips. See the result when you add a new fill.

14. Create a new group named Handle. Place it above folder Cuplips. Select Pen Tool. Draw path same on image 14a. Ctrl+Enter to make a selection. Select folder Handle then click Add Layer Mask on Layer Palette.

15. Select Pen Tool and draw a path same as the image below(15a). Press Ctrl+Enetr. Press Ctrl+Alt+D to open the Feather Selection. Set the radius by 2 pixels. Click OK. Add Create New Fill, select Brightness/Contrast. Set Brightness to -30 and contrast to 0. Click OK. Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast H. Make sure the fill is inside the folder Handle. See image 15b.

16. Select Eraser on the Tool Box. Set the following: Brush:60, Mode:Brush, Opacity:100, Flow:100. Erase the upper part of Brightness/Contrast H. Follow the arrow. See the image below (16a).

17. Select Pen Tool and draw a path same on the image below (17a). Press Ctrl+Enter to create a selection. Press Ctrl+Alt+D to change the Feather radius to 2. Click OK. Add Create New Fill inside the folder Handle. Select Brightness/Contrast. Set the value of Brightness to 40 and Contrast to -10. Click OK. Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast I.

18. Same on Step 16, Use Eraser to remove some excess light. See the image below for the part you need to erase.

19. Select Pen Tool. Create the same shape of path on the image above (18a). Press Ctrl+Enter. Press Ctrl+Alt+D, same with the previous steps. Enter 1 pixel. Click OK. Add Create New Fill, select the Brightness/Contrast. Set Brightness to -40 and Contrast to -10. Click OK. See the result on the image below (19b). Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast J.

20. Select Eraser. Set the same setting used in Step16, except on the size of the brush. You can change the size of the brush by pressing [ ]. Play the different sizes of the brush and erase the part that you need to remove. See the result on the image below.

21. Duplicate the fill Brightness/Contrast J. Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast K. Use Eraser to lessen the dark part. See the images below.

22. Select the Pen Tool. Draw a shape same as the image below (22a). Make a selection by pressing Ctrl+Enter. Make a Feather Selection and set the radius by 1. Above fill Brightness/Contrast K add Create New Fill and select Brightness/Contrast.Rename Brightness/Contrast L. Set the Brightness to -100 and Contrast to -60. Click OK. See image 22b. Same step for erasing the part that you want to remove. Erase the lower part of the handle. Same setting on the previous step. See images below. (22c and 22d)

23. Add a new group and name it Inside. On the previous steps, we create a layer named Inside of Cup. Drag this layer inside the folder group named Inside. Ctrl+left click the square shape inside the layer Inside of Cup to create a selection., then left click the folder group Inside. Press the botton Add Layer Mask. So we're working now inside the folder grroup named Inside. Same steps we did on the other groups previously.

24. Ctrl+left click the square shape in Inside of Cup layer to set the oval shape as a selection. Add Create New Fill, Select Brightness/Contrast then set Brightness to -60 and Contrast to -20. Click OK. Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast M. Select the Eraser. Set the setting similar on the previous step. Press [ ] to adjust the size of the brush if necessary. See images 24a and 24b.

25. Select Elliptical Marquee Tool, Drag the same oval on the image below. Press Ctrl+Alt+D and set the Feather radius into 2 pixels. Click OK. Create new layer above the fill Brightness/Contrast M. Press G and fill the new layer of dark brown color. Rename the layer Coffee. See the image below (25b).

26. Again,select the Elliptical Tool and create new oval same on the image below (26a). Ctrl+Alt+D and set the Feather radius by 2 pixels. Click OK. Add Create New Fill above the layer Coffee. Set the Brightness to 95 and the contrast to 5. Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast N. See image 26b as a result.

27.The background for the cup of coffee will be done on this step. Select the layer Background on the Layer Palette. Select the Ellipse Tool and draw an oval same from the image below (27a). Ctrl+Enter to make a selection. Press Ctrl+Alt+D and set the feather radius to 65 pixels. Click Ok. Create new layer above the layer Background. Select the Paint Bucket and fill the new layer with 10% black or R:232 G:231 B:232. Rename the layer WhiteTable. See the result below (27b).

28. The shadow of the cup of coffee will be created in this step. Select Pen Tool and draw a path same on the image below (28a). Ctrl+Enter. Ctrl+Alt+D and set the radius by 10 pixels. Click OK. Above the layer White Table, create new layer and name it CupShadow. Press G to select the Paint Bucket Tool. set a foreground color to 70% black(R:109 G:110 B:113)then fill the selection. Ctrl+left click the square shape inside the layer CupShadow to make a selection. Go to select>modify>contract. Set the Contract selection by 8 pixels. Click OK. Add Create New Fill above the layer CupShadow. Select Brightness/Contrast and set Brightness to -80 and Contrast to -10. Click OK. Rename the fill Brightness/Contrast O. See the image below (28b).

29. Select the Pen Tool and draw a path same on the image below (29a). Ctrl+Enter to make selection. Press Ctrl+Alt+D and change the feather radius into 15 pixels. Click OK. Add Create New Fill. Select Brightness/Contrast. Set Brightness to 60 and Contrast to -15. Rename the fill Smoke. Make sure Smoke is above from the folder group Inside. See image 29b as the result.

30. Select the fill Smoke. Go to Filter>Liquify. Set the following: Brush size:204, Brush density:50, Brush Pressure:100, Mode: Revert. Distort the image until it looks like a real smoke. You can undo by pressing Ctrl+Z until you get the smoke effect you desire. See sample image below.

31. Select Elliptical Marquee Tool and drag same on the image below (31a). Ctrl+Alt+D and set feather radius into 30 pixels. Click OK. See the image 31b. Duplicate the fill. Rename it Smoke2. Press Ctrl+T, then pull up the image same on the image below (31c).
