This tutorial will teach you how use the advanced dynamic features of
Photoshop brushes palette to create colorful painting brushes. This
tutorial requires basic knowledge of Photoshop.
Step1:- Create a shape or open an image. We will use the following:
Step2:- Select the part of the image you want to use as a brush. In this case we will just select the whole image using MENU > SELECT > ALL. You can use the lasso or any other selection tool.
Step3:- After making the selection, go to MENU > EDIT > DEFINE BRUSH PRESET… A window will pop up with the image you selected on the left and a text field to type a name for that brush.
There is something important to take into account. The Photoshop CS painting engine, uses colors or grays as levels of transparency, so if you selected a portion of an image or a color shape, your brush will be transparent and will mix with previous strokes. If you use a black and white shape or image instead, like we did in this example, the white area will be 100% transparent and the black area 100% opaque.
Step4:-Create a new blank document. In this case we will create a 300 x 300 pixel RGB white background image and select the brush tool.
Step5:- Now open the brushes palette located by default at the docking area space at the top right corner of the workarea. If you don’t find it there because you previously closed it or somebody else did it, then go to MENU > WINDOW > BRUSHES and the Brushes palette will popup.
Step6:- Now scroll down to the bottom of the brushes list (see the image below) and you will see the image you selected.
Step7:-Select BRUSH TIP SHAPE at the top left corner
of the brushes palette. Then move the SPACING slider to increase the
repetition spacing. Take a look at the image below.Step8:-
Now select the SHAPE DYNAMICS option (leave it checked) and play with
the settings. The SHAPE DYNAMICS option lets you adjust several aspects
such as the rotation and size of the shape. The term JITTER indicates a
randomness in the effect. Increasing the JITTER for each control, makes
the effect more random and less subtle. Always check the preview at the
bottom of the window. If you want to follow this tutorial more closely,
just copy the values in the window below.Step9:-
Now select COLOR DYNAMICS at the left column of the brushes palette and
leave it checked. Here you can specify the color variation that the
shape will show each time it is painted. The Foreground/Bacground Jitter
is the ammount of color variation between the current foreground and
background color that the shape will use. The Hue Jitter is the value
that you have to change to get different color than the foreground or
background. The other controls handle other characteristics of the
selected colors. Anyway, you won’t see the effect on the preview window.
You will have to paint into a blank area such as the 300 x 300 pixels
document we’ve already made.
Step10:- Now select different foreground and background colors and paint on the blank image we created previously.
