The bitter
winter will be over soon, but real, crisp sunshine is still to come. So,
we thought you might like a procedure that generates sunlight.
Sometimes you encounter a sad, colorless photo on your monitor. Or even
in dazzling sunlight, the camera might not reproduce exactly the milieu
basking in the rays. By increasing color levels and color contrast, this
feeling can be emulated quite well, especially when concentrating to
warmer colors. Read on to learn how. As a small gift, you can even
download the executable action of the procedure at the end of the
article. But still, it’s worth to read it.

|
1. Open the photo
The
photo we have here was taken in strong sunlight, but this cannot
really be noticed. It’s high time we brought back some of the original
feeling.
|
|
2. Triplicate
First, switch the color mode of the image. Click Image/Mode, and switch from RGB Color to Lab Color.
As for the next step, instead of the familiar layer duplication, we’ll be triplicating. Click Layer/Duplicate Layer and then OK. Repeat once more. Now you have three identical layers. Select the uppermost one for the next action.
|
|
3.
Sunshine
Click Image/Apply Image and set the values indicated above. Mind two settings: Set Channel to 'b' (one of the color channels in Lab Color mode), and Blending to Linear Dodge.
|
|
4.
Layers in one
Now return to our
favorites, the layers. As you can see, the uppermost one has been
treated rather drastically. Stay here for a while and set its blending
mode from Normal to Multiply.
Now
click the empty square to the left of the middle layer. You have just
linked the two layers. You need to do so in order to merge them. Click
the small arrow in the upper right corner of the Layers palette to display a menu, and choose Merge Linked. This merges the two linked layers.

|
5. The sun from between clouds
Now
we have an upper layer with lively, warm colors, and a lower one with
the original color levels. You have to add the effects from the upper
layer to this one. You can lure out sunshine from the rather dark upper
layer by choosing the Screen blending mode. If the effect is too strong, decrease Opacity to refine it. We set 55% but once again, choose the value according to your taste.
|
|
6. How much more alive…
...and
cheerful these colors look when compared to the original! One thing
you have to keep an eye on is increased color noise. If you detect
increased noise, set a lower Opacity.
